A New Era Opens with the 2020 General Assembly Session
As the new session convenes on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, both the Senate and House of Delegates will have new leadership due to the death of Speaker Michael Busch last year and the recent decision by Senate President Mike Miller to step down from leadership due to health issues. Both leaders served longer than any of their precedcessors, and everyone will need to adjust to the change in presiding officers.
Fortunately, we have two outstanding replacements to guide us through the transition, Speaker Adrienne Jones (D-Baltimore County) and Senate President Bill Ferguson (D-Baltimore City). Both have excellent records of support for progressive legislation and thorough knowledge of issues. Many measures supported by UULM-MD were either sponsored by or supported by these lawmakers, and we look forward to working with them in the coming sessions.
During the 90-day session, the Senators and Delegates will consider upwards of three thousand bills on many different subjects. For the fifteenth consecutive year, UULM-MD will be working with its allies to advance several very important measures that support Unitarian Universalist values. For the second year in a row, we have seven active Issue Task Forces, and we will also be providing support for efforts to increase funding for public education, a matter strongly supported by the new legislative leadership.
