It’s That Time of Year Again!
Since its early history, those charged with managing Maryland’s government met every year in Annapolis in mid-winter (after the crops were harvested) to make laws, and 2022 is no exception. The regular session of the Maryland General Assembly reconvenes on Wednesday, January 12, to begin its 90-day session (ending April 11), and once again UULM-MD is prepared to advocate for the passage of measures that support our UU values.
So far, 220 Senate Bills and 200 House Bills have been “pre-filed” (filed before session and ready to be introduced on day one), including one measure (two bills, one for each chamber to consider) proposing one of our immigration priorities, access to counsel in immigrant proceedings. The full descriptions and text of HB 114 & SB 129 will become available once they are formally introduced on Wednesday. A flood of other bills will be introduced in the next few days and weeks, often totaling nearly 3,000 for the session. All will be competing for the attention of lawmakers, so our efforts must be well-focused and our messages compelling.
While it may take a while before our priority bills are heard in the various committees, now is the time to contact your lawmakers in support of enacting these important public policies. Please use the resources on our website and sent by our Advocacy Teams to educate yourself on the issues and reach out to your Senator and Delegates seeking their support. Read for our weekly digests informing you of recent events and upcoming hearings where you can testify or attend. Finally, please pay attention to the alerts that we will be sending during the session advising when to best contact lawmakers before hearings and voting sessions in committee or the chamber floors.
Now is the time to be a full participant in State Government!
