Police Accountability Law Now in Effect
Updated: Jan 7
Landmark police accountability legislation became a reality in our state on October 1, 2021. With our support, the Maryland General Assembly passed several comprehensive measures to transform the way policing is done throughout the state and make transparent the process of holding officers accountable for misconduct.
The Maryland Police Accountability Act of 2021 is a complex, multifaceted approach that includes a new Use of Force policy with significant consequences for excessive force, restrictions on no-knock warrants, independent investigations of police misconduct, disclosure of the results of misconduct investigations, and replacement of the obstructive Law Enforcement Officer's Bill of Rights (LEOBOR) with new procedures for administrative discipline. We have just completed a detailed description of the major components of this important legislation which can be accessed on this website at this link.
