Protect Democracy - 2024 Elections

This November, democracy is on the ballot in the national election, and the Unitarian Universalist Association's UU the Vote campaign will be active in organizing this effort around the country. And again, UULM-MD will be partnering with the Virginia UU State Action Network, the Reeb Project for Voting Rights of All Souls Church, UUs for Social Justice (UUSJ), and UU the Vote to coordinate the efforts of UU congregations and individuals in the region.

Check out our Election Calendar to find election events through November 5.

Since Maryland politics is dominated by one party, many local UUs believe that the votes of Maryland in the Presidential Electoral College are not in doubt this year and believe that they can be more impactful by being involved in Get-Out-the-Vote (GOTV) efforts in other, "swing" states that could determine who wins the highest office in our nation.  However, we need to recognize that (1) Maryland has a highly competitive race for U.S. Senate, (2) three open House seats need to be filled with new Representatives, and (3) the ballot will include a critical referendum to enshrine reproductive rights in the Maryland Declaration of Rights (the State Constitution).  This important amendment was strongly supported by UULM-MD, as it enshrines the provisions of Roe v. Wade in our State Consitution.  As we did with marriage equality in 2012, we will be mobilizing Maryland UUs to get the word out about this amendment and urging voters to pass it.

UULM-MD will be taking the lead in organizing statewide to get Marylanders out to vote.  Stay tuned for our UU the Vote efforts and step up to make your views heard.

Our "Democracy" pages of this website contain many resources for you and your congregation, including:

We even have special pages to help UUs "vote your values" and talk to others about issues in ways that reflect our faith's values. This is important since election outreach gives us opportunities to engage in relational organizing, doing deeper dives about our shared values and building community. After developing these skills with people we know, we can then reach out beyond our circle of family and friends to engage potential voters (e.g. using lists provided by movement partners such as  VoteForward, Reclaim Our vote, or State Voices).

In addition, we created videos available to the public about voting that you can access in a YouTube playlist called Your Vote Matters. While they date from 2020, the information they provide is just as relevant today.

Thanks for doing your part in governing!
